The illustrator Oliver Weiss loves exploring new ways. Not for him the cultivation of a specific style, nor does he focus all his energies on any one technique or craft. The reason may lie in his background.

O

liver Weiss’s style is familiar because his illustrations are published so widely – in newspapers and magazines, on book and journal title pages.

And yet this style of his keeps changing; it is not even to be associated firmly with any particular graphic techniques.

Nor is illustrator Oliver Weiss any more readily pinned down in terms of theme.

He is attracted by the newness of each fresh challenge, the quest for the specific artistic means that it demands.

The Linking Element

If there is a linking element amid all the diversity, a consistent feature to his work, it lies in a certain elusive quality that might be described as whimsical or unpredictable – if only these terms gave an inkling of Weiss’s insight and wit.

However we define this special quality, it has proved persuasive with clients ranging from Deutsche Bank and the German Ministry of Finance to leading daily and weekly newspapers such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine, the Süddeutsche Zeitung and DIE ZEIT.

An Idiosyncratic
Career Path

His motifs are characterised by a degree of ambivalence and may introduce unusual perspectives, or suggest surprising implications.

These qualities may have their roots in the idiosyncratic career path traced hitherto by Munich-born Weiss, the illustrator with a degree in engineering:

»I’ve gone in for quite a variety of different things over the years – apart from illustration, some of the others have been mathematics, behavioural research, journalism, editorial work, design, painting, animation, expert report writing, and music.

So it’s not a big problem for me to draw material from any of these different areas.«

an kennt seinen Stil aus zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen in Zeitungen, Magazinen oder auf Buch- und Zeitschriftentiteln. Nur wandelt sich dieser Stil laufend und ist auch nicht an bevorzugten grafischen Techniken festzumachen. Auch thematisch möchte der Illustrator Oliver Weiss nicht in eine Schublade eingeordnet werden. Gerade die immer neue Herausforderung, die Suche nach der spezifischen reizt ihn.

Das verbindende Element

Vielleicht steckt das verbindende Element, sozusagen der rote Faden seiner Arbeiten, in dem, was die Angelsachsen gerne »whimsical« nennen und was sich mit geistvoll-witzig überraschend nur schwer übersetzen läßt. Eine Linie, die jedenfalls Auftraggeber von der Deutschen Bank und dem Finanzministerium bis zu FAZ, Süddeutsche Zeitung und DIE ZEIT überzeugt.

Eigenwilliger Karriereweg

Eine gewisse Doppelbödigkeit, ein ungewöhnlicher Ansatz, eine überraschende Deutung kennzeichnen seine Motive. Das mag mit dem eigenwilligen Karriereweg zusammenhängen, die der in München geborene Diplomingenieur Weiss zurückgelegt hat: »Ich habe mich über die Jahre auf recht vielfältige Dinge eingelassen – neben Illustration unter anderem auf Mathematik, Verhaltensforschung, Journalismus, Redaktion, Design, Malerei, Animation, Gutachten und Musik –, so daß es mir nie wirklich schwerfällt, aus irgendeinem dieser Bereiche zu schöpfen.«

Starting off with Cartoons

He has also created websites for publishers and leading law firms, set up a heavyweight legal ezine, worked for C.H. Beck as a freelance editor, and he also did a spell in packaging design. No wonder his stylistic techniques keep ringing the changes.

»I started off with cartoons and simple sketches. Then over the years I added editorial illustration, collage, digital linocut and a few other things. Working as I do on several stylistic fronts gives me access to a wider spectrum of work than I could get with just a single string to my bow, and in the long run that adds up to financial survival.

Anyway, it would bore me stiff to sit year in year out working away at just one style of illustration. I definitely hope to go on developing and in ten years be doing totally different things from now.«

Mixed-media and Beyond

Right now he is engaged in the rediscovery of collage, with the difference that this time his images are computer-generated from the start. His material is contributed by scanned books, old postcards, letters and photographs, with occasional special items such as hundred-year-old layout plans drawn up by the Royal Bavarian water authority for water supply to a twenty-strong village community: these had been among his deceased grandmother’s papers.

Weiss comments: »It always fascinates me to watch a blank page gradually fill – and then find myself ending up with something that wasn’t planned at all.« But of course that absolutely doesn’t mean it’s going to be collages all the way from now on: variety is the spice … And already Oliver Weiss is turning his attention to the American market more. The only constant is change. [2011]

Am Anfang
waren Cartoons

Außerdem entwickelte er Websites für Großkanzleien und Verlage, ein großes juristisches E-zine, arbeitete als freiberuflicher Redakteur bei C.H. Beck und im Packungsdesign. Kein Wunder also, wenn auch die Stilmittel immer wieder wechseln.

»Angefangen habe ich mit Cartoons und einfachen Zeichnungen. Mit den Jahren kamen dann Editorial-Illustrationen, Collagen, digitale Linolschnitte und einiges andere dazu. In mehr als
nur einer Stilrichtung zu arbeiten ermöglicht mir, ein größeres Spektrum als mit nur einem einzigen Strich abzudecken, was mir letztlich auch das finanzielle Überleben sichert.

Außerdem wäre es mir viel zu langweilig, tagaus, tagein, über Jahre hinweg dieselbe Art von Illustration zu machen. Ich hoffe sehr, ich entwickle mich immer weiter und mache in zehn Jahren ganz andere Sachen als heute.«

Collagen und mehr

Im Augenblick hat er die Collagen wieder neu entdeckt, die allerdings mittlerweile direkt am Bildschirm entstehen. Verwendet werden eingescannte Bücher, alte Postkarten, Briefe und Fotos, oder auch einmal hundert Jahre alte handgeschriebene Pläne der königlich-bayerischen Wasserversorgung einer Zwanzig-Seelen-Gemeinde, aus dem Nachlaß der Großmutter.

»Ich finde es faszinierend, wie sich eine leere Seite so nach und nach füllt – und am Ende dann oft ganz anderes herauskommt als geplant.« Aber das bedeutet natürlich nicht, daß nun nur noch Collagen entstehen würden, Abwechslung ist gefragt.

Im Augenblick konzentriert sich Oliver Weiss verstärkt auf den amerikanischen Markt – nur der Wandel ist beständig.
