THE COMPETITION

ne of the world's
largest international cartoon competitions, the Polish Satyrykon festival, won
me a special award in 1994. Out of roughly 2,000 entries, eleven cartoons were
awarded prizes. The award ceremony took place in Legnica, Poland. The
organizers received 1,724 works from 377 artists in 42 countries. The jury
qualified 264 works from 144 artists to the post-competition exhibition.
The award ceremony was really
nice. I got to meet a great many cartoonists from around the world, including
Czech cartoonist Jirí Slíva who was also a member of the jury, and who took me
back to Prague by car on my way home, only to invite me with his family and to
show me around in his wonderful art studio in the center of town. Thanks, Jirí! |

Included in Satyrykon "Best
of" Cartoon Calendar
The international cartoon festival Satyrykon,
based in Legnica, Poland, has published a "best of" calendar to commemorate the
festival's 25th anniversary. The calendar incorporated 12 selected cartoons from
award winning entries over the past 25 years.
My cartoon entitled "Sheep Shadow",
which has been awarded a special prize in the 1994 Satyrykon festival, has been
included in the calendar alongside cartoons from cartoonist Jirí Slíva, the
best-known cartoonist from Czechoslovakia, and Gerhard Gepp, one of Austria's
best-known cartoonists.
My cartoon illustration is also
available as a
limited-edition lino print.
