Welcome to Oliver Weiss Illustration!

My work is immensely influenced by the dada and surrealist art movements which I still find strikingly contemporary even after a hundred years.

Collage is a dynamic illustration technique where various materials such as photographs, scrap paper, books, and vintage postcards are cut and then arranged and glued onto a surface to create a new composition until they start articulating their own unique “voice”. This type of artwork is particularly fascinating in that, by layering and overlapping different elements, I can create an intriguing sense of depth and multi-dimension­ality that I find impossible to achieve otherwise.

Working in both the digital and analogue realms of editorial illustration, I like to explore collage techniques in playful ways, seeking to provide an intriguing experience on behalf of the viewer.

Meine Arbeit ist stark von Dadaismus und Surrea­lismus beeinflusst, die ich selbst hundert Jahre später noch immer als modern und brandaktuell empfinde. In der Collagetechnik werden auf experimentelle, spielerische Weise einzelne Bestandteile unterschiedlicher Materialien wie Fotografien, Papier­schnipsel, Bücher und alte Ansichts­karten ausgeschnitten und neu zusammengefügt, bis die Komposition mit einer eigenen „Stimme“ zu sprechen beginnt.

Durch das Übereinanderschichten verschiedener Elemente wird ein Gefühl von Tiefe und Multidimensionalität erzeugt, das mit keiner anderen Technik vergleichbar ist. Ich arbeite sowohl digital als auch analog.

Mon travail est fortement influencé par le dadaïsme et le surréalisme, que je considère, même cent ans plus tard, comme modernes et d’une étonnante actualité. Dans la technique du collage, des éléments provenant de matériaux variés – photographies, bouts de papier, livres ou anciennes cartes postales – sont découpés et réassemblés de manière expérimentale et ludique, jusqu’à ce que la composition commence à «parler» d’une voix propre.

En superposant différents éléments, on crée une impression de profondeur et de multidimensionnalité qu’aucune autre technique ne permet d’obtenir. Je travaille aussi bien en numérique qu’en analogique.

Il mio lavoro è fortemente influenzato dal dadaismo e dal surrealismo, che considero ancora oggi, a cent’anni di distanza, moderni e di sorprendente attualità. Nella tecnica del collage, elementi provenienti da materiali diversi – fotografie, ritagli di carta, libri e vecchie cartoline – vengono tagliati e ricomposti in modo sperimentale e giocoso, finché la composizione non comincia a “parlare” con una propria voce.

Sovrapponendo diversi elementi si crea una sensazione di profondità e multidimensionalità che nessun’altra tecnica è in grado di offrire. Lavoro sia in digitale che in analogico.
