Legal Alien in NYC

A Green Card gave me the chance to start a new life in the United States—and seemed to fulfill a lifelong dream. In my new book, Im Land der begrenzten Möglichkeiten: Einmal New York und zurück (Legal Alien: New York and Back), I share the story of that journey. I arrived in New York City full of hope, only to collide with a reality that bore little resemblance to what I had imagined.

From harrowing living conditions to a culture where friendliness is often non-committal and relationships are purely transactional, my fascination crumbled day by day. As the dream gave way to disillusionment and after a long internal struggle, I made a radical choice: I left it all behind, and moved to Berlin.

Written with laconic wit and at times hair-raising humor, this is the story of a reality that failed to live up to the hype—an honest, piercing portrait of the American soul. Published by Penguin Random House to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the United States, the book includes several black-and-white illustrations.
